Maintaining critical power supplies

The world is currently witnessing exponential growth in the construction of data centers. Generative AI and cloud services require huge computing power, and data centers are the crucial infrastructure required to deliver it.

Because they play such a key role, it is crucial that data center operations are not disrupted. Even brief moments of downtime can result in significant reputational damage for operators, and severe financial losses. It is estimated that an outage incurs costs of approximately $9,000 per minute, and total incident costs frequently exceed $1 million.

For this reason, an emergency power supply is essential for any data center. AVK-SEG is a company that specializes in innovative power solutions for the sector, and this includes standby generators using Rolls-Royce engines that can quickly take over if the main power supply is compromised.

A mission-critical cooling system

Güntner has partnered with AVK on a number of data center back-up projects in Germany and the UK, supplying Güntner V-shaped Dry Coolers together with aicoreTM smart controllers.

“In all these cases, we supplied a mission-critical cooling solution that could meet our client’s unique requirements,” says Zulqarnain Zulfiqar, Sales Engineer at Güntner.

These requirements included:

  • A Bespoke Control Solution. It was essential to minimize any kind of lag in cooling when the backup engine started. For this reason, the aicoreTM controls were specially modified using additional electrical components. “As soon as there is a power failure and operations migrate to emergency power, the cooling system rapidly powers up,” says Zulfiqar.

  • Resilient Units. Even if units spend long periods unused, it is crucial that they operate reliably when called upon. All Güntner products are built with premium brand components, ensuring exceptional performance and durability. A commitment to innovation and superior quality ensures that they meet the highest standards of efficiency and reliability, tailored to customers’ specific needs. And a proactive approach to maintenance not only enhances system reliability but also extends the lifespan of the equipment, providing customers with peace of mind and optimal performance. “We have a longstanding relationship with AVK and they always appreciate our timely support,” says Zulfiqar.

  • Strict Adherence to Noise Restrictions. Güntner’s specialist laboratory at its Fürstenfeldbruck HQ in Germany uses a wide range of specialist equipment to measure sound emissions on all of its unit designs to ensure that they comply with regulatory standards. Indeed, Güntner’s highly efficient EC fans have a reputation for low noise output. “One of our customers told me that they love our units because they’re not noisy and that’s a major reason for choosing our products,” says Zulfiqar.

Working together

“We have enjoyed a lasting relationship with AVK,” says Zulfiqar. “They are leading experts in their field and we have proved ourselves able to meet their very exact requirements in this important field.”

Güntner offers a broad range of cooling solutions for IT, from small, on-premise computer rooms to giant, hyperscale data centers containing many thousands of servers, offering customized solutions to suit a customer’s precise needs. Very often, both energy efficiency and water efficiency are key concerns for data centers, and Güntner technology, including our aicoreTM intelligent control system and hydroBLUTM adiabatic cooling system, can bring considerable savings for both.

“Our data center clients always take a comprehensive look at the design and performance of the equipment they are deploying,” says Zulfiqar. “Our products have reliability built in and are designed for optimum results.”
